My friend, Kimra, taught me an interesting concept several years ago. She called it “Family of Choice.” For some lucky people (and I’m one of them) their biological family is wonderfully close, caring, loving and supportive. Others, however, aren’t so lucky. While they certainly love their family as a whole, given the option they might not have chosen a few of the members. And, that’s the logic behind this different concept of kinship when dear friends form a "Family of Choice."
Since my own family is not nearby in Colorado, my local FOC is incredibly important to me. And, while my blood relatives, especially my sweet Dad, are always close in my heart, it’s my friends and my husband -- here with me day-in-and-day-out -- who make my life complete. When one of us needs help or support our “Family” is right there, taking care of each other. I’ve had the honor to witness this outpouring of love in a variety of ways and it’s always inspiring!
So, if you are feeling a bit lacking in the biological family department, I encourage you to create your own “Family of Choice.” Everyone deserves loving support!
