A dear old friend and a crazy new one. Meet Okie Doke, my new 6-month-old half Jersey, half Angus calf – soon to be a full size cow.
You might remember last spring when I wrote about wanting a new farm animal to join my little menagerie at Lucky Penny. The universe said "Nope" and so I released the expectation of getting a cow and moved on instead with a friend's beautiful horse that came to live at the ranch.
Fast forward a year and without any planning on my part, a series of events (some very weird and never imagined) conspired to bring Okie here. One of those events was the very sad passing of Duke, my huge, strong, beautiful horse who had been part of my family for nearly 20 years. He gave me and my friends hundreds of spectacular adventures, like parading in the Evergreen Rodeo and swimming days at a local pond. It was heartbreaking to lose him and yet he was 29 and had lived a fantastic
life.
Duke's stall sat empty until a situation came up when a friend took in and bottle fed a 3-week-old calf (his mother died). He was in dire need of a home or else he'd go to a feed lot! I gave him serious consideration and then thought: Okay, God, I guess you are telling me NOW is the time. So, in honor of Duke, whose registered fox trotter name was Okie Coco Louie, I have a new family member named Okie!
The lesson in all of this has been to release exact expectations. Often, our dreams do come true but a bit differently than we planned. And while I can still try to control happenings around me, I'm getting much better at going with the bigger picture, most of which I can't see because my vision for the future is so tiny.
So, RIP magnificent Duke and welcome adorable, super sweet little Okie!
Sending hopes that you can adjust the exact specifics of your dreams. Who knows how the universe may be conspiring for you right now!
