December 2023
Inspiration often comes to me in unexpected ways. Like from Donna, pictured with me in the photo above.
My friend, Margo, works at a senior living center in Evergreen. Margo is passionate about her job interacting with the elderly and she shares heartwarming stories about many of them. She mentioned Donna, a blind woman, who lives at the center, who is unable to walk and yet brings so much joy to those around her. So, when I was volunteering at a local Thanksgiving luncheon for seniors (147 seniors were served a delicious meal along with musical entertainment and opportunities to socialize), I
saw a blind woman in a wheelchair as she was lowered from the transport van. I found Margo and asked if this was Donna, and if so, would it be possible for me to meet her. Yes! Margo told her that Gail wanted to meet her. I was standing next to Donna and waited quietly for a few minutes while she urgently searched in her purse. I thought she might need a tissue or something. Imagine my surprise when she pulled out a red clown nose. She wanted to put on the nose before she was introduced to me.
Her concern was to make ME happy and joyful.
To some of you, this might seem like a pretty small thing. But, really! This elderly woman – blind, in a wheelchair, unable to do much of what we all take for granted – was focused on being a gift to the world, not on her own challenges. Wow! Such a great reminder for me when I have a "poor me" moment.
I hope this holiday season showers you with joy and inspiration. And that you do the same for others!
Thank you for your friendship, support, and inspiration for so many, many years. I appreciate you more than you'll ever know. Happy Holidays!
