Message from Gail Sharp September 2019
It can be so easy to be complacent about normal, everyday experiences. Fortunately, I am given constant reminders to take nothing for granted.
A reminder came to me about a month ago when a good friend started to lose his ability to swallow. As the days advanced, he couldn’t eat at all and could barely drink liquid. How terrifying! The good news is that after many doctor appointments, research, medication, and change in eating habits, he is recovering.
His experience brought me, front and center, to a strong message about appreciating everything! Luckily, with age comes a bit of wisdom (albeit intermittent) to slow down a bit and notice little things.
Like, the weekly walks with my friend Gail in a wooded area behind her house where we really take time to notice nature’s gifts. I adore Gail and our conversations – we walk in all seasons! – and our times together are even more special because we marvel at each footstep, remarking about the log covered with bright green lichen, the giant pile of fallen pinecones, the dead tree that created a cool sculpture, the bright blue feather lying amidst the ferns. We certainly do not
march along, but instead gently stroll. Back at home, I sit at my small pond watching dragonflies, tall pond grasses, a couple of female ducks that are there every day. These are the times that are just so perfect! Please, today, slow down and appreciate your ability to swallow, the fact that you woke up to see the sun rise, your ability to touch a beloved family member or animal, and that morning cup of coffee. Take nothing for granted. It’s a type of gratitude that transforms your
life. Gail Sharp is the owner of TallGrass Spa and Salon. Email her at sharpgail@aol.com .
